The Col de Vars is woven into pro cycling history, with appearances in both the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. One of its most famous moments came in the 1949 Giro, when Fausto Coppi crossed Col de Vars during his legendary long-range solo to Pinerolo, one of cycling’s great mountain raids. That blend of altitude, endurance and racing mythology gives Col de Vars a special place in the imagination of riders who love the high Alps.

The climb rises from Guillestre in the Hautes-Alpes, climbing 18.9 km to 2,109 m with 1,115 m of elevation gain. Its steady 5.9% average gradient hides ramps up to 14.4%, making it a long, honest Alpine ascent that rewards pacing, patience and strong legs.
